Since the 1970s I have worked in system and application programming, for more than 45 years in reinsurance, both in professional reinsurers as well as primary insurers. Almost 30 years I was in charge of the development of a widely used reinsurance standard system.

I master all types of reinsurance: facultative and treaty business, proportional and non-proportional reinsurance and the reinsurance of life and non-life lines. This applies to equally for contract, individual risk, claims, accounting and statistics, and accumulation search and management as well as exposure control.

In this context I have designed almost innumerable interfaces from and to the reinsurance system for continuous automatic processing of the transactions of the primary insurance companies in relation to reinsurance with the following main points of focus:

• Communication with the general ledger and the current account
• Communication with other reinsurance systems in cession and acceptance
• Communication with various DWH systems for general reporting, BaFin reports and Solvency 2
• Regular or (the ideal case) synchronous data transfer from the portfolio and claims systems for automatic reinsurance determination, the distribution of portfolio and loss entries on the reinsurance instruments as well as for major and clash loss detection and disaster loss determination as a basis for accounting purposes

In the course of more than 40 system implementation projects I have migrated existing data in all variants: from sequential files, from Excel files, from databases of various origins (often via MS Access) into the DB2 or Oracle database of the target system.

Prerequisite for both the interfaces and the migrations was always the exact analysis of the supplying systems, processes, data flows and data structures. By understanding the structures and the contents and their meanings, it was possible to fill the target fields in a correct way.

At the beginning of my professional activity I was in systems programming in a large mineral oil company in Hamburg for two and a half years, responsible for systems generation, programmer consulting for Cobol and PL/1 and test tools, support of source code management and programming in IBM Assembler. Afterwards I worked freelance in several projects in the application development with Cobol, CICS and DL/1, including more than half a year at a primary insurer in Hannover in the redesign of its portfolio system.

For the following nine years I was responsible for the development and management of the IT department of a professional Hamburg based reinsurer. There I learned reinsurance „from ground up”. With my staff and a whole range of external forces, I designed and implemented a comprehensive reinsurance accounting system mainframe-based in Cobol and IMS-DB/DC including financial accounting with general ledger and current account. Accounting was based on the contract conditions that were also maintained in the system, defined per reinsurer and the year. On this basis in addition to premiums, claims and commissions, also unearned premiums including premium portfolio entries and withdrawals, loss reserves, profit shares and deposits were accounted. Furthermore reinsurance statistics and a premium and reserve estimation system were parts of the realized total volume.

More than 30 years ago, I started to work on the development of a reinsurance standard system as head of department and chief designer. The system has been installed more than 40 times throughout Europe. Within this framework, I have conceptually developed large parts of the system, its functions and its data model.

My basic requirement was always to implement the functions in such a way that they are dynamically controlled by tables maintained by the developer or, even better, by the user to allow an easier program maintenance, adaptation and enhancement. This approach has proven to be successful and sustainable. Further the maxim was to design and implement enhancements and adaptations such a general way that they could be used for as many customers as possible.

In sales meetings and project work, I have presented the system, system parts, concepts, discussed and designed adaptations and enhancements with the customers, designed and also carried out by myself migrations. Further focal points of my work were the development and implementation of trainings for the system and also for reinsurance as well as the support of implementation and optimization projects at the customers.
